Ten Reasons Why Group Portraits Are The Way To Go!
Aug 12, 2019 | By: Jennifer Lebo
I am beyond smitten with my new portrait passion- senior group sessions!
Last week, I shared with my mom readers a few simple tips for saving money on senior portraits. One of those tips was to book a group portrait session, and it is by far my favorite tip on the list.
In fact, the group portrait session is such a fabulous idea, that today I want to share with you my TOP TEN REASONS WHY GROUP PORTRAITS ARE THE WAY TO GO!
1. SAFETY IN NUMBERS
It’s a tale as old as time. Girls going to the bathroom in groups, or having a girls’ night out, or girl dates. Girls always feel safer, more relaxed, and more comfortable when they’re with their friends. Now, think about how much more relaxed and less nervous your girl will feel if she experiences her senior portraits with her friends. A somewhat uncertain event has now become a group celebration.
2. DOUBLE OR TRIPLE THE CLOTHES
One of the money saving tips I mentioned in my last blog post was to skip the shopping spree and stick with your daughter’s closet. But what if there were multiple closets? When girls plan group portraits, they join closets, share outfits, and have a blast planning their wardrobes together. Not only do the clothes multiply, but the fun does too.
3. NO NEED FOR HAIR OR MAKEUP
Another tip from the money saving blog post was to skip the trip to the salon, which could be expensive. When girls prepare for their group portrait session together, they can do each other’s makeup and hair, blast their playlist, and suddenly prep time becomes a prep party. And let’s be honest. When it comes to hair and makeup, no one can help your girl better than her best friends.
4. GENUINE SMILES AND EXPRESSIONS
Girls always make each other laugh and smile in the most authentic ways. It’s why I always love having friends present at teen portrait sessions. This way, when I’m photographing each girl separately (which should still happen at a group portrait session), her friends can stand behind me, chat it up with the girl in front of my camera, make her laugh, smile, and relax. She forgets she’s in front of the camera, and the fake smiles disappear. Genuine expressions.
5. LESS SOLO PROOFS MAKE MORE SENSE
When I photograph a typical senior portrait session, we shoot for about an hour which provides about 30-35 solo proofs of that girl. It’s lovely and so fun, but honestly that’s a lot of images of one girl. Now consider the group session. Depending on the size of the group, in an hour or two, 35 solo proofs are reduced to maybe a dozen. Still a great variety of options for mom. But now, in addition, each girl has group portraits of her best friends, something every girl will cherish. This makes much more sense, and makes both girl and mom happy.
6. FRIENDS GET A DATE
The moment a group of girls set up a date for portraits, the event goes on all their calendars and the fun begins. The portrait session is not just about portraits. It’s an experience for the girls, a “girl date”, an unforgettable event that the girls will talk about for long after.
7. CELEBRATE CONNECTION, SKIP COMPETITION
I’m a big advocate for girls building up girls, for women skipping the comparison game, and for empowerment and connection for all. Group portraits do that. When girls plan and enjoy portraits together, they stand around and make each other smile. They hug a LOT (at the photographer’s direction too!). And they encourage each other for an hour or more straight. It’s an amazing experience for a girl to spend an hour being encouraged and loved on by her friends. Think about how amazing it is to have an entire group of girls feel like that.
8. MOMS SAVE TIME
I’m all about creating an experience that girls love for the fun, and that moms love for the benefits. And when girls plan group sessions, moms save time. Now moms can be there if they want to, and enjoy the experience with their daughters, but they no longer have to be. One more can drive the girls, another can pick up. Or if the girls are older, one girl can drive everyone. But that safety in numbers idea (Reason #1) allows moms to relax and know that they are no longer obligated to be the moral support. And every mom could use a little more time!
9. MOMS SAVE MONEY
I shared this idea in my last blog post, as group sessions are a fantastic way for moms to save money on senior portraits. Splitting the cost 3 ways or 5 ways, rather than footing the whole bill is a no brainer. And each girl still gets plenty of variety, plus all those special portraits of her friends. I absolutely LOVE this reason for group portraits, and it’s why I plan to make group portraits my signature service in 2020.
10. CONFIDENCE BUILDER!
You know I’m all about building confidence in girls. This is the most powerful way I can do that with my camera, and with with group sessions, I’ve got that secret weapon with me. Her friends. Her empowerers. As girls relax and simply enjoy time with their friends, they forget to be nervous. Couple that with a good photographer who knows how to light, pose, and interact with her models, one who knows how to pour confidence and self love into them. And you’ve got something very powerful. You’ve got a portrait experience that each girl will never forget, a message that each girl will carry with her for life. She will hear it from her friends. She will hear it from her photographer. She will see it in the finished proofs. She is beautiful. She is worthy. She is exceptional. This is the power of the group portrait session.
How amazing is all of this?
So many fantastic reasons why GROUP PORTRAITS are an absolute must! So grab your daughter, and her friends, and let’s book some portraits!
