Four Great Locations For Colorado Springs Portraits
Jun 10, 2019 | By: Jennifer Lebo
I am not a well traveled girl.
But I can still stay with confidence that Colorado is one of the most beautiful places in the world. And it’s a daily occurrence for me to stop in my tracks, take a look to the west, sigh and think, “Wow! I can’t believe I get to live here.”
It’s also an amazing gift to be able to be a portrait photographer in this place. Colorado Springs specifically, lends itself so well to portrait photography. Beyond its stunning views of Pikes Peak and the front range, downtown Colorado Springs is lovely, not overwhelmingly large, but big enough to create that bustling vibe.
I love it here, and I love creating here.
So today, I want to share with you FOUR of my favorite places to shoot portrait photography.
1. GARDEN OF THE GODS
It would feel ridiculous to start a list like this with any other location than Garden of the Gods. This stunning red rock formation is a National Landmark and sits just in front of Pikes Peak. The views are amazing and the portraits are stunning.
Anyone shooting photography in Colorado knows this.
But for me, it’s not just High Point, or Kissing Camels, or Balanced Rock that create spectacular portraits. For me, it’s about spots like the one just north of High Point, when the road splits and becomes a one way path. There’s a pull off lot just after the split. And a downhill path with steps and a small bridge. There are no views of the mountains from here, but the path and the fields are just lovely. Try that location in autumn. You’ll love it.
2. DOWNTOWN COLORADO SPRINGS
I probably shoot here most. Or maybe second most. It’s such a fun place to take seniors for their portraits. I suggest parking near Bijou St, near Story Coffee if possible, and then heading over to Tejon St. The shops along there are so beautiful and varied, perfect for the backdrop of an urban senior shoot. I love to finish back on Bijou, at Acacia Park, to add a touch of green to the senior portrait portfolio.
What’s better than urban and natural in one portrait shoot, in less than a 2 block radius. This spot is fantastic!
3. FOUNTAIN CREEK PARK
I’m a southern Colorado Springs girl, and we live down in the Fountain/Security/Widefield area, so this spot is close to home- literally. It’s on the southern most part of town, off Rt 85/87, and has a cute little park with a small pond and a playground.
But take the entrance road a tiny bit further, to where it turns to dirt, and drive to the small parking lot at the end, and you’ll come to the trail system. My husband love to run these trails all year long, but I love taking portraits here.
Just a short walk up and down the trails, to the north or south, or even a bit west, and you’ve got a great variety of colors, of light, of looks.
Understand though, that many of us Fountain photographers know and love this place. I have rarely gone to this location and found myself the only one with a camera. Be prepared to meet up with many other photographers.
4. FOUNTAIN VALLEY SCHOOL OF COLORADO
If the last location was close to my home, this one tops it, because it is my home. And I share it last today because it truly is best- at least in my opinion. FVS has to be one of the most beautiful places in all of Colorado Springs.
The front prairie has the absolute most spectacular view of Pikes Peak, thanks to Elizabeth Sage Hare who had the wisdom to choose a location set back a bit from the mountains in order to enjoy the views.
Fountain Valley School is acres of prairie, stunning views of the front range, and the most gorgeously landscaped campus.
Unfortunately, it’s not accessible to outsiders, but lucky for me, I live here, so I get 24/7 access to the views, the light, and the location. FVS is absolutely my happy place.
5. WANT MORE?
Like I said, Colorado Springs has so many great locations. I haven’t even listed places like Manitou Springs, near the Penny Arcade, or Old Colorado City near the art district!
