It’s been the same every year, for as far back as I can remember.
With a simple flip of the calendar, everything changes for me, and it happens at the same time every year. The month of September. The ninth month. The end of the summer, and beginning of autumn. So much about this month thrills me. And so I figured, what better way to ring in my favorite month than with a little post about why September is the very best month of all.
1. IT’S FOOTBALL SEASON
I’m a soccer mom, it’s true. Gosh, I don’t even know how that happened. I never played a day of soccer in my entire life, and now, here I am, up to my eyeballs in stinky soccer socks, water bottles, shin guards, and oh so many soccer balls! And I love it!
But football was my first love, and it’s my husband’s passion too, and so we love when September rolls around. College football is our jam, to be sure, although we are crazy for our NFL team too. We may or may not have named a certain daughter after a certain QB. I can neither confirm nor deny that.
But anyway, I come from years of football, and now our boys enjoy it with us, too (perhaps we named the wrong kid after him). Saturdays in September mean a morning of soccer, followed by an afternoon of Michigan football, or now following our nephew as he plays for Boston College! Seriously, football makes September the best!
2. IT’S SWEATER SEASON
Now I know I’m jumping the gun here, and in fact, I’m pretty sure it hit 90 this weekend. Which makes sense. After all, it’s still summer. I know!
This reminds me of one of my most vivid memories from college.
I was a freshman. It was early in September. I know this because it was the first day of classes. I should have known better, having just spent the last 2 weeks sweating my butt off during three-a-days in FH preseason. But nope. It was September, and so for the first day of classes I wore my new jeans, my new autumn sweater (it had reds, oranges, browns, in gorgeous early 90’s flair!) and my new booties. And I trudged up that hill from my dorm to class. I was a student at Colgate University, in the middle of the Chenango valley, and that campus is HILLY! By lunch, I looked like a sweaty, deflated, poodle (think big curly hair- remember, early 90s).
By senior year, I was rocking shorts and a tee to the first day of classes.
But that’s September for me. Perhaps I’ve learned not to jump the gun anymore, but I know the promise of sweaters, jeans, and chillier weather awaits. Leave will turn, pumpkins will appear, and life will get a little bit chillier and sweeter.
3. IT’S BACK TO SCHOOL TIME
Now I’m married to a teacher, so this makes no sense. Not to mention that every September, my quiet days give way to chaotic nights filled with 20 teen girls who now live in our dorm. But truly, I love it. And I love that my kids head back to school, too. And my hubs. I do! I miss them terribly, and love seeing them every afternoon, but I thrive on that morning routine. I love the quiet of the house as I crank out blog posts and edit portraits. I love hugging my baby when he gets off the bus. September for us is like a new year. The entire family starts over, and starts fresh. New classes, new teachers, new dorm girls, new goals, new hopes. It’s the best time of year.
4. IT’S BIRTHDAY MONTH
Now this has always been my big reason for loving September. It’s my birthday month, and I just love it. Coupled with the new hopes of the school year, and some football thrown in to boot, I just love celebrating my birthday as summer literally changes to fall (yes, my birthday is on the first day of autumn!).
But now there’s an even better birthday to celebrate. My daughter’s birthday is just a few days before mine, and she is truly the best birthday present I ever received. This year she turns 13, and I’m struggling between feeling excitement and dread. She’s growing more and more beautiful everyday, becoming more of her own person, and trying out new things all the time. But she’s also getting a little sassy, a bit more emotional, and a whole lot more dramatic. Woah! We’re in for a bumpy but unforgettable ride together.
I’m actually excited this September to plan something extra special for her, and I’ve already started chatting with some others about it. Nothing extravagant, but something a little extra special. I think I’ll be sharing it with you in a couple of weeks as well, because I thought it would be even more fun if I celebrated her birthday and mine by doing some sort of Mother/Daughter Portrait Giveaway. That’s coming for sure, so keep an eye on that.
But yes, September is the best. This year my girl will turn 13, and I will turn… 29 plus a couple. ;)
5. IT’S PORTRAIT SEASON
This is my most recent reason for loving September, but it’s quickly moving up the charts! Just as the new school year brings new hope and new students, so does the new potrait season. And September is my most favorite because it means HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS! Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoy photographing families, but there is something about photographing the teen that sets me on fire. I suppose it’s the same reason I choose to live with them every school year. It’s crazy, but I see my time with them in the dorm, and their time in front of my camera as my opportunity to build every one of them up. My camera is my tool into their day, and into their world, and every September I get to do it all over again.
And so here we are, another page of the calendar turned, and my favorite month upon us again. And so I come to you with a request.
Bring me your seniors.
Bring me your neighbors’ seniors. Your friends’ seniors. Those seniors in your husband’s math class (oh wait, that’s my husband!). Remember, it’s my birthday! And that’s what I really want for my birthday this year. I want a calendar FILLED with high school senior sessions- an opportunity to fill the next few months with teens, and to fill their hearts and minds with confidence, self-worth, and the very best of everything.
And don’t forget, it’s not just my birthday I’ll be celebrating this month, but my little- I mean, teenage- girl. And I’ve got a fun way to celebrate our birthdays with you, so stay tuned for that in two weeks.
