Truth be told, I struggled with whether to use this photo as “the photo” on my “About Jen” page. I mean, I kind of look like a goofball, don’t I? But you know, there are a few reasons why this is the PERFECT photo to use here.
First, I kind of AM a goofball. For real. I love making people laugh, mostly the people in my home. I love playing little tricks on my kids, anything to make them smile. I just love laughter. I think it’s the result of having grown up with a dad who had us in stitches every day. I love making people smile and laugh. If I gotta be a goofball to do it, then I’m game.
And that’s what I was doing when my daughter took this photo. Which is reason number two for why this photo is the perfect choice for this page. My dramatic, moody, sometimes gloomy, always mistreated (as she’d tell you), teen daughter took this photo of me. And I was trying to make her laugh. And it was so much fun. So when I look at this photo, I think of her and that day, and I smile. What better reason could there be for choosing this photo?
But there’s one more reason why I chose it. It’s more important for me to learn to love pictures of myself, especially ones my daughter took, than it is to feel “perfect”. Yeah, I kind of look goofy. Yeah, my wrinkles are coming in nice and strong. But I want to be ok in front of the camera, and I want to see my beauty, because I want my daughter to grow up learning to see her beauty, too. I want her to get comfortable in front of a camera, to see the beautiful parts of herself. And she’s gonna have to learn that from me. So that’s the real reason this photo is up here.
What about you? Your daughter? Are you navigating this treacherous road called “parenting a teen”? Do you notice your daughter struggling a bit more with her confidence? Her self esteem? Her body image? Did she learn that from you, the way my daughter did from me?
Do you want to learn new ways to build her confidence? Maybe even use your camera- and mine- to empower our daughters through their teen years?
I’d love it if you do. I could use another goofball on this journey!
